Thank You Card Etiquette

Post Wedding you’ll want to relax so you will be glad to hear that Wedding Thank You Cards are the final piece of your Wedding Stationery Suite!!  These are an absolute must for every gift you receive. Thank You cards let your guests know that you appreciate their attendance and also their wedding gift.

To help we have listed some thank you card etiquette you should follow.

Who gets a Thank You Card?

  • Guests who gave a gift
  • Friends/ Family who provided an item/ service (like making the wedding cake, providing a car, decorating the venue, dropping things to the venue etc.)
  • Each member of the Bridal Party
  • Friends/ Family who did a reading in the ceremony
  • Your priest/ registrar
  • Vendors

To make life easier: Save your Wedding Invitation List! When you are ready to start opening presents, take out the list and write a note about the gift beside the relevant guests name.

When to Send?

Our couples often ask ‘When should we send our thank you cards? Thank You Cards should be sent around 6-8 weeks after the wedding. To help speed up the process it is a good idea to order your thank you cards with your wedding invitation suite. Here at Pretty as a Picture we offer personalised wedding thank you cards to match any of our letterpress or digitally printed wedding invitation designs, if you spent time choosing the perfect invitations and stationery then what better way to thank your guests than with a thank you card matching the other pieces of your wedding stationery!

Couples should keep a list containing a quick description of each gift you received and who you received them from for when you are ready to write those all important Thank You Cards. This will help you to personalise the messages in your cards.

To face the daunting task of sending so many thank you notes, couples should plan to write a certain number of wedding thank you cards each evening.

Wording Your Wedding Thank You Cards

You have your thank you cards and a list of recipients..now what to say!

Again we are often asked ‘What do we write in our Thank You Cards’. To express your genuine appreciation Thank You Cards should be personalised to each guest. There is no right and wrong wording so long as you address the guest by name, express your gratitude, make specific reference to their gift e.g we think of you every time we use our crystal glasses and finally thank them for sharing your special day. In terms of money gifts, thank your guest without mentioning specific amount.

Here are a couple of sample Wedding Thank You Card wording options to get you started:

Dear John & Mary,
