Wedding Speech Betting Slips

While planning Ailbhe’s wedding we wanted to create a unique and creative alternative to the traditional Paddy Power betting slips to put on her wedding tables. Ailbhe got to work and painted a vintage betting scene and our vintage wedding speech betting slips were born!!! These proved to be a great hit at her wedding so much so that people keep asking to buy them from us and so here they are…

Wedding-Speech-Betting-Card

Wedding betting slips are the perfect ice-breaker for tables, allowing guests to bet on how long the speeches are going to last!! Guests can choose to bet on the duration of the Best Man’s Speech or the duration of the first speaker to the last word of the last speaker. Simply leave a betting slip and envelope on each table (to put all bets in). Each slip lists the ‘rules’ and has space for all guests to input their name and time. You can purchase your wedding speech betting cards here.

The do’s and don’ts of storing your wedding dress

Wedding Dresses can pack away beautifully and remain as white and perfect as the day they were worn: but there are some simple essential rules for brides to follow:

DON’TS

1) Plastic dress covers are not suitable for long-term storage:  They do not allow for changes in humidity, or protect from light and can leave particles behind after several years.

2) Normal cardboard or fabric boxes can contain acid that causes the material of the dress toyellow” or discolour. Avoid flat pack storage boxes that offer limited protection, or ones that let in light.

3) Do not store the dress next to the wood of a wardrobe, drawer, suitcase lining, or other clothes, as these mediums will have an effect on the purer fabrics of the wedding dress if the it lies next to them.

4) Do not wrap a wedding dress in coloured tissue paper. Tissue paper to pack a wedding dress should be white and acid free.

5) Do not hang a dress long term on a clothes hanger (short term is fine), as it places stresses on the seams and shape of the dress.

6) Do not store your dress in the attic. All sorts of disasters here such as a leaking roof, damp, changes in humidity, and insects can affect a dress in the attic; even if it is well protected.

DO’s

1) Do have your dress cleaned after the wedding, by a dry cleaner that specialises in wedding dresses. Marks can show later even if a dress does not appear stained now.

2) Follow simple sensible rules e.g. store away from light, heat, damp, etc

3) Store the dress in a warm dry spare room, that has no history of insects, instead of an attic.

4) Ensure the dress lies in a pH neutral material such as a wedding dress box and is packed with acid free tissue. (Acid free tissue paper will become acidic if kept in a non acid free box.)

5) A storage box should eliminate light, should be breathable (i.e. non plastic), protect from dirt, dust, and spillage, in addition to pH neutral i.e. contain no acid or alkali.

6) Do choose a really strong, sturdy box as it needs to last a lifetime. It might even need to protect from disaster such as fire or flood so a flimsy box might not be up to the mark!

7) Do choose a wedding dress box that you love: it will be with you for a long time, holding one of the most special items of clothing you will ever own.

8) Once packed away, check on the dress every 6 – 12 months to ensure nothing untoward has happened, and repack e.g. once a year to help prevent creases becoming too permanent.

Tips for Writing Thank-You Cards

The thought of writing wedding thank-you cards or notes makes many engaged or newlywed couples cringe. This very important expression of your gratitude, however, can be much easier than you think with a bit of planning and organization. Here are some tips for making the job much more enjoyable.

Make It Personal
Thank-you cards for engagement, shower and wedding gifts should be hand-written on personalised stationery and signed by one person. Traditional etiquette calls for the note to be personalised with the name or monogram of the person signing the note. Today, many couples find it more convenient to use notes personalised with both of their names or initials so that either one of the couple can use the notes for wedding-related gifts.

Please note that etiquette does still dictate that, before the wedding ceremony, the bride use her maiden name or monogram. Your married name or monogram should be reserved for notes sent after the wedding. Similarly, until you are married, the notes should be personalised with your individual name or monogram {rather than being personalized with “Jane & John”}.

Write Early & Often
If you start to write thank-you cards as soon as gifts begin to arrive, you’ll find it much easier to get through them all more quickly and easily. Once the gifts really start piling in, set a goal of writing three or four notes each day; otherwise, your feeling that it is a chore will come through in formulaic, lackluster notes. By sending a note right after receiving the gift, you’ll be better able to remember and capture the feeling of gratitude that you felt when opening the gift.

For engagement parties, bridal showers and other pre-wedding events, the thank-you notes should be written within two weeks of receiving the gift. For wedding gifts, try to send them as soon as possible but not later than three months after the wedding. {For wedding gifts sent before the wedding, the two week rule should apply so that the giver is not left wondering whether the gift actually made it to you.}

Remember that each gift requires its own thank-you card or note, even if you receive a shower gift and a wedding gift from the same person. Similarly, each person who contributed to a group gift should be sent a thank-you note.

Get Organised
Have on hand a supply of personalised stationery that you really like and a great pen. You will look forward to the task much more when you love the look and feel of the stationery, enjoy holding the pen in your hand and the way it writes, and picture the gift-giver’s reaction when opening the envelope.

If you have a spreadsheet to track your wedding invitations and replies, add a few columns to the document to track gifts received and wedding thank-you notes written.

Share the Load
You can get through your list of thank-you cards in about half the time if you and your new or soon-to-be spouse split the job. Each of you can send notes of thanks to your respective family, friends and coworkers. Don’t worry if one or both of you have less-than-stellar penmanship. A thoughtful and heartfelt thank-you will overcome any thoughts about bad handwriting.

Who’s Who?
Be sure to show your appreciation to the following people with a hand-written thank-you note:
• Wedding guests who brought or sent gifts
• Wedding party {each bridesmaid and groomsman}
• People who helped out with the ceremony {officiant, readers, ushers}
• People who helped in some other way {drove people from the airport, made food, helped
decorate}
• Hosts of showers and luncheons

Words of Thanks
Tips on what to say and how to structure the message: Write your notes in a conversational tone, as if you were thanking the giver in person. Try to come up with an opening other than the classic “Thank you for the {blank}” to make your notes less formulaic.

Keep the focus of the note on the guest. If you receive a monetary gift, say something like “Your generous gift was so thoughtful” to avoid direct references to the amount or form of the gift. Never mention that you returned a gift, that you received others just like it, or that it arrived damage. {The “ignorance is bliss” idea works well here.}

Signing Off
The closing of your note should reflect your relationship with the giver. “Love” is appropriate for family and close friends, whereas “sincerely” may be the best option when writing to your boss or coworker, or to friends of your parents.

The Heart of the Matter
The main thing to keep in mind is that you want to express your appreciation to all the people who went out of their way, and spent their time and money, to do or give something special for you and your wedding. Remembering the gratitude that you feel for them and their kind gesture will keep you in the spirit and make the process much easier and far more meaningful.

The Couture Wedding Invitation Process

If you are hoping to go the extra mile and really impress your guests, then couture wedding invitations could be what you are looking for.

Here at the Pretty as a Picture studio we will collaborate with you to create beautiful, bespoke invitations tailored especially to reflect you as a couple. Our in-house designers and illustrators will work closely with you every step of the way to bring your vision to life! Inspiration can come from just about anywhere – your wedding venue, the story of how you met, your hobbies, colours, culture or an art period! We love to hear all your ideas, no matter how crazy! Read on to find out more about the couture process and how to get started.

So how do we get the creative ball rolling?!

Step 1: Lets Talk…

Arrange a no obligations, complimentary studio consultation with one of the Pretty as a Picture team so we can get to know you both, your style and your vision. We want to hear all about your destination wedding, your special engagement, the story of how you met, your shared hobbies or whatever’s on your mind so that, together we can come up with the perfect invitation design that reflects you and your special event. Don’t worry if you don’t feel you have a story – we will help you to create it!! Alternatively your consultation can take place via phone, skype or email. Distance is not a barrier to our creativity! We work with couples all over the world. So we understand if you can’t visit us in studio and pride ourselves on being able to design amazing unique pieces for couples we have never even had an opportunity to meet!

We will follow up your consultation with an initial quote, availability and details. Keep in mind that a lot of time needs to be set aside for research, illustration, design, production and printing. Only taking on a limited number of projects ensures we can give each one the care and attention it deserves. So it’s best to start and order early – we want you to really enjoy the creative process!

Step 2 : Let the Magic Begin…

Once we have all your order details and deposit you can begin to submit any inspirational images and links. From these and all the exciting ideas from the initial consultation we will create a custom mood board especially for you. This will give us (and you!) an idea of your wedding invitation style, colours and mood! Go ahead and use this mood board to help you plan other aspects of your wedding, from your flowers to your cake, by sending it your other wedding vendors for inspiration.

Step 3: To the Drawing Board!!

With a firm grasp on your story and vision we will now create some initial drafts. We put a lot of time into these initial sketches to make sure they are perfect! We work closely with you to incorporate any changes you may have so that the drafts become the final design! This means you get as many changes as necessary, free of charge before the final artwork is created! We will discuss the type of artwork you require (pen and ink or pencil and watercolour) and outline the materials and printing process we’d like to use in your design. We offer letterpress or digital printing on a variety of papers – one of our stationery experts will bring you through all the options!

Step 4: Proof…

When you are completely happy with the main artwork, a final proof is created for your approval.  We explore lots of different combinations of colours, fonts, layouts and compositions for your invitation.  One of our stationery experts will help you with your wording and etiquette. We then move on to laying out all your additional stationery pieces (rsvp, directions etc). At this point we can also advise on exciting embellishment options to compliment your suite, such as coloured envelopes, envelope liners, backing cards, folios etc…

Step 5: Start the Presses!

We’ll need your signature for approval and the final balance paid in full..then it is time to relax and let us take care of printing and production!!  Printing and assembly of invitations usually takes in the region of 3 weeks.

Step 5: Get Writing!

We will email you to let you know your bespoke stationery pieces are in our studio ready for delivery (or collection if you wish). It’s time to get out that address book, consult with the mother-in-law-to-be and to amaze your guests by sending out your unique invitations one by one!

Get in touch or book your consultation to find out how you can introduce your big day with an extra special invitation… we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!!

Go for Gold

Gold wedding invitations add sophistication to a royal wedding – or a royal-like wedding :)
Gold is one of the most glamorous and elegant colours you can add to your wedding to make it an event to remember! This trend is incorporated through our Bella Figura Letterpress Wedding Invitation Collection. And this dazzling metallic isn’t just for traditional or formal weddings — it also works perfectly to add a feel of romance to vintage inspired weddings, and an unexpected flare to modern and contemporary weddings. To add this sparkling shade to your invitations, you can mix letterpress and gold foil stamping, or go with all foil printing (think matte gold and shiny gold for a super-stunning effect!).

Foil Edging v Edge Painting- you decide

Edge Painting v Foil Edging

Last week we introduced you to the hottest new trend for 2012 – foil stamping!  And explained how you can now choose to customise any of the designs from our Bella Figura letterpress wedding invitation collection or your couture wedding invitation design with foil stamping.  Today we’re here to tell you about the differences between foil edging and edge painting, and help you to determine which embellishment will work best for you – we know, we know the customisation options are endless!

Bella Figura Image

Trying to decide between Edge Painting v Foil Edging? – Here are a few thing to ask yourself:

1. Do you want a sleek, metallic shine or a reflective edge? 2. Are you using foil stamping in your suite? 3. Do you want to use an accent colour outside of our letterpress inks? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then foil edging may be the perfect choice!

Foil edging is a fabulous new embellishment option available at Bella Figura, and adds a metallic sheen to the edge of any letterpress invitation
Bella Figura Image

We are completely in love with foil edging. Shiny metallics are really popular for weddings in 2012, so if you are looking for a trendy new way to enhance your invitations this may be the perfect fit for you. There are 12 dazzling new foil colors that are all stunning (ranging from more traditional silver, gold & copper colors to more modern teal, fuchsia & indigo). Foil edging leaves a shiny edge that we think is breathtaking. If you can’t fit foil stamped invitations into your budget but still want a special hint of shine, you can add foil edging!

1. Do you want a bright pop of colour (think neons) 2. Do you want a matte finish? 3. Are you trying to keep costs down? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then edge painting may be the perfect choice!

Edge painting is an embellishment option available to add an extra burst of color to Bella Figura's letterpress wedding invitations & stationery.
Bella Figura Image

Edge painting is directly associated with letterpress inks – we can edge paint in any of our ink colours! (Check out our Bella Figura Letterpress Collection) We do offer 3 metallic inks – gold, silver, and bronze – but the finishes have more of a matte look instead of a shine.  Edge painting is also more affordable than foil edging, so if you are on a budget but still want an edge, edge painting is the way to go! Nothing can compare to seeing these embellishments in person. You can always order samples or book a consultation here in the Pretty as a Picture Studio.
